Question 2

How do I find the Pasión Por Tango Studio?

The studio is located on the lower level of the building and is accessed via an external staircase between the building and the park.

From the car park, walk away from the parking area, bearing left around the building. You will find the staircase on your left between the building and the park. Follow the stairs down to the lower level, where you’ll find the studio entrance.

If you’re attending for the first time, we recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early so you can find the studio comfortably and settle in before class begins.

What type of tango will I be learning?

Kelly teaches authentic Argentine Tango as it is danced in the milongas of Buenos Aires and throughout the world.

Classes are relaxed, engaging, and fun, with a strong focus on connection, musicality, technique, and solid fundamentals. The goal is to help you become a confident social dancer who can enjoy dancing with a wide range of partners at milongas, practicas, and tango events anywhere.

What should I wear?

Wear clothing that allows you to move comfortably and feel at ease.

Many students come directly from work and attend class in their work attire, while others prefer to bring a change of clothes. There is no strict dress code—comfort is the most important thing.

Question 5

What footwear should I wear?

Beginner Students
If you don’t yet own dance shoes, choose footwear with smooth soles and minimal grip, as tango involves plenty of pivoting and turning.

Good options include:
• Flat shoes with smooth soles
• Sneakers/trainers with a pair of thick socks worn over them
• Thick socks on their own

While not essential when starting, a pair of tango shoes is ideal. Tango shoes are specifically designed to support the movements, balance, and pivots unique to Argentine Tango.

Intermediate Students
By this stage, we recommend investing in a pair of tango shoes. They provide greater comfort, stability, and freedom of movement, helping you get the most out of your dancing.

Why is personal hygiene important in Argentine Tango?

Argentine Tango is a social dance built on connection and is often danced in a close embrace with someone you may have only just met.

As a tanda can last 10–15 minutes, personal hygiene plays an important role in creating a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone—both in class and at social dances.

For a milonga, many dancers arrive freshly showered, bring a change of clothing, carry a small towel, keep their breath fresh, maintain clean hands, and take a moment to rest between tandas when needed. Fragrance may also be worn, though always with consideration for those around you.

These simple acts of care help create a welcoming and enjoyable environment for everyone. Looking after your personal presentation is a sign of respect for your partner, yourself, and the wider tango community.

What is a milonga?

The word milonga has three meanings in Argentine Tango:
• A style of tango dance
• A genre of tango music
• A social tango dance event

Most commonly, dancers use the term to describe a social tango event. A milonga is much more than a place to dance. It is a social gathering where people come together to share music, conversation, friendship, and community. Whether you choose to dance or simply enjoy the atmosphere, there is never any obligation to dance.

What is a tanda?

A tanda is a set of songs played together during a milonga or practica.

A typical tanda consists of three or four songs by the same orchestra and from a similar musical period. Dancers usually remain with the same partner for the entire tanda before changing partners.

What is a cortina?

Cortina is the Spanish word for “curtain”.

A cortina is a short piece of non-tango music played between tandas. It signals the end of one tanda and provides a brief break before the next begins, allowing dancers to thank their partner, return to their seat, and prepare for the next dance.

What is Student Practica?

A bridge from the classroom to the milonga.

Student Practica is a relaxed and supportive space where students can practise what they have learned in class, explore new ideas, ask questions, and gain confidence through repetition and experience.

It is an opportunity to meet fellow students, share, connect, learn from one another, and simply enjoy dancing together in a friendly environment.

A teacher may be present to offer guidance and answer questions; however, practica is not a structured class. It is a space for self-directed practice, exploration, and growth—helping your tango become more natural, comfortable, and confident.
