Safety, on the Dance Floor
Safety, comfort, and etiquette. Tango is a shared dance, and everyone has a part in keeping the space safe, respectful, and welcoming.
-
Keep fresh breath and clean hands.
-
Avoid strong perfumes or aftershaves.
-
Bring a towel if you sweat.
-
Bring a change of shirt if needed, especially for leaders.
-
You do not have to dance with anyone you feel uncomfortable with.
-
Use the cabeceo to invite someone to dance.
-
Looking away is a respectful way to decline.
-
Accepting or declining a dance should always be respected.
-
If you have favourite partners, enjoy them — but when possible, also give aspiring beginners a chance.
-
A kind tanda can help someone feel welcome and continue their tango journey.
-
Dance in the embrace that feels comfortable for you.
-
Close embrace is by mutual consent.
-
Followers may keep their distanced frame if they do not wish to dance in close embrace.
-
Open or close, the dance should feel respectful, relaxed, and safe.
-
Keep movements small and controlled on a crowded dance floor.
-
Avoid high boleos, large ganchos, big kicks, or dramatic movements in a busy milonga.
-
Leaders should adapt the dance to the available space.
-
Followers should keep their feet close to the floor unless there is clear room and a safe lead.
